Sky as a Muse - Influence of Astronomy in the Arts and Literature
It seems a daunting task. Attempting to make a comprehensive (and also interesting for someone with only a casual interest) compilation of all (easily available) references showing the influence of Astronomy in the Arts and Literature.
Daunting, yes. The first step towards this task was taken when an exhibition was compiled to be displayed in a gallery at the Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi. Following the completion of that task, here is an attempt to put that exhibition online, and then follow it up with additions, in the hope of reaching somewhere close to a comprehensive collection, on this website.
The division of the Planetarium exhibition is along the links displayed on the left, in the table below.
Art and Literature references divided according to the following categories.
| Sun, Moon and Eclipses | Astronomical references in Kalidasa |
| Stars, Constellations and Planets | Omar Khayyam |
| Directions, Zodiac and the Seasons | Dante |
| Comets and Meteor Showers | Shakespeare |
| Instruments, Observations and Views of the Universe | Robert Frost |
| Guest Stars, Nebulae and Galaxies | Walt Whitman |
| Sky Phenomena | |
| Urania and Mythological connections |
